HYBRID FORGING
HOW DO WE COMBINE LIGHTNESS WITH STRENGTH? WITH THE NEW HYBRID FORGING TECHNOLOGY FROM LEIBER
In industry, aluminium is associated with many positive properties. With hybrid forging, LEIBER combines these properties with the positive properties of steel. And so a little idea becomes a great achievement: in many areas, “less” becomes “more”. You can see this on our hybrid forged drive flange.
Using our proprietary hybrid forging technology, we have created a drive flange that has been verified for mass production. Its weight is 47% lower than a steel drive flange and we plan to make many more components much lighter using this hybrid forging technology.
WE CALL IT:
STAHLUMINIUM®
To create our drive flange, we lay the driveshaft, which has already been produced in C35 steel, into the forming tool together with an untreated aluminium block. Using a forming force of 600 t, the aluminium is pressed in and around the steel shaft; the materials' transition area is just 40 cm².
This creates a permanent bond which is as strong as a driveshaft forged from steel – just a full 47% lighter!
